Falling asleep to audio
Plenty of people fall asleep to a voice or to rain. The trick is to do it for hours without sore ears and without loud sound.
Keep the volume low
Sound through headphones can run for a whole night, so volume matters more in bed than anywhere else. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders gives two numbers to remember: 70 and 85 decibels.
A sleep sound should sit well under the first number. Set it as low as still covers the noise you want gone.
“Sounds at or below 70 A-weighted decibels (dBA), even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss.”
“However, long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss.”
“The best ways to protect your hearing are to avoid exposure to loud sounds, move away from the noise, or turn down the volume.”
Why flat speakers
Earbuds press into the ear when your head is on a pillow. A headphone mask puts thin, flat speakers inside a soft band, so a side sleeper can lie on one.
The Alaska Bear Bluetooth mask uses Bluetooth 5.2. Its speakers slide inside pockets, so you can line them up with your ears, and they come out before washing.
What it will not do
A headphone mask covers noise with sound. It does not cancel noise. Alaska Bear states that its own model has no active noise canceling. The description gives no battery figure, so charge it before a long flight.
Questions
In short
Is it safe to sleep with headphones on all night?
Keep the volume low. According to the NIDCD, sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure, while long exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause it.
Can you sleep on your side with a headphone sleep mask?
Yes, if the speakers are flat. The Alaska Bear Bluetooth Headphone Mask has 2 thin speakers inside a soft band, made so that side sleepers do not feel them.
